1 mile:  6:31

5K:  23:37

Half Marathon: 2:04

My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

12.62 outside. Ave. pace 9:30. Ouch. And hooray. Details to follow. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go cry. I mean, stretch.

PS take that, Brent.

OK. Here are the grisly details. I headed out the door around 10 am with my Garmin obscured. I planned on only looking at my watch, and run relatively easy until noon. I had music with me, though, which always makes me go faster, especially if I like the song. It was weirder than weird to encourage myself by thinking about how I "only" had one more hour to run. Here are my splits:

9:30, 9:31, 9:37, 9:32, 9:31 (potty break, and stop to drink gatorade--off the clock)

9:16, 9:15 long live gatorade!, 9:36 (stop to drink again), 9:27, 9:39 (quick gulp), 9:30, 9:30, and 9:39 pace for the .62.

Total ascent: 1105 ft. Total descent: 1164 ft.

This run was a real record breaker in a lot of ways. My longest run to date was a 10 miler last week at 11:00 pace on the treadmill. So here are the records broken today:

1.) Longest continuous run ever by 2.62 miles.

2.) Longest continuous run outside by 4.62 miles.

3.) Best time for 10 miles by 19 minutes (I was at 94 min. for 10 miles).

4.) First time I've run more miles in one day than I have on all the other days of the week combined.

5.) First time I've ever cried after a run. It wasn't out of sadness, though. I was just so grateful that I was done, and I was so glad that I made the stupid goal of running until noon.

6.) First time I've ever had white, crusty salt all over my face after a run. Does this happen to everyone? I seriously could've seasoned several pounds of cooked broccoli with all the dried salt on my face. Yuck.

7.) Slowest triumphant entry. I had no kick at the end--whatever! I just could not move any faster. That was weird. Those last 5 minutes of running were SOOOO hard to me. I thought of nothing but stopping almost the whole time.

I'm not sure that I actually could've done a 2:04 half marathon. I was off the clock every time I had to stop for a red light or to drink and stuff. My real time would've been closer to 2:12 or something with stops. But anyway, I'm glad I got this long run in, despite the weariness I feel now.

AWESOME run! Way to get in a nice long run.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 14:35:05

Very good. You were headed for a 2:04 half just in a training run. I'll wait for details to make more comments.

However, I'd say that if you were to run a marathon right now, you would finish around 4:30. I would wait, however, until your speed/endurance combination suggests you can go sub-4:00.

Way to go Lybi! I think that is awesome after vacation! Sometimes we need a vacation after the vacation to be able to catch up on life....not you! Cool comments from Sasha! Sometime I hope he looks at my info and gives me his two cents, (which is actually worth a heck of a lot more than two cents!) on where he thinks I am right now.

From Mik'L on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 15:42:01

Whoa Lybi...you are smokin! Almost a half at 9:30 pace! You are going to be just fine at Painters.

From Michelle on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 15:43:49

Lybi, between you and Kim you guys are really turning up the heat!!! (ouch). Did your hubby do that with you, did you do that on the treadmill? You win today again!!!

I haven't ran yet today as I worked last night and the kids and hubby were gone so I have been logging my sleep hours... was going to run with the hubby when he gets home and I know with him that I won't get a very long run in.... I wondering if I should go it alone and keep up with the group? You are killing me!!! in a good way :)

From Brent on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 15:54:56

Lybi, awesome, 100 commando points. No doubt, better then Gwen, great, great and very good pace. No tears or fears for you. See you are Striders half and St. George marathon. You should be proud of yourself.

WOW!! You are doing such a great job!! What a day of firsts.

I love the salt comment. I definitely get the salt. I get weird gooey stuff around the corners of my mouth, too.

Congratulations on a terrific week of training!

YOU ROCK! Your improvement has been amazing. And yes, the crusty salt on the face is a common occurrence in long runs. I have a black hat that I wear, and it has white spots all over it at the end too. Same with the underarm chafing (which you mentioned a few weeks ago, but I forgot to comment). Ah, the aches and pains of long runs (which are SO worth it)!

GOOOOO LYBI! You're awesome! Its been so fun to watch your progress over just a few months- look how far you've come!!! To think you ran this in 9:30 without even having the race adrenlin (sp?)going- you're going to ROCK at Painter's! Did you do this long run alone? If so- bravo! I never run that far alone (but, then again, I'm kinda wimpy...)

Stops in a long run make things worse. If you told me I could take as many idle stops in the marathon as possible off the clock, I would not do any unless it was something like a high-carb lunch followed by an hour nap or so. Running for longer than 90 minutes is all about fuel, as opposed to oxygen debt in a shorter run (in which case a brief stop would help). And unlike a car, it is very hard to get much fuel in for a human in a short period of time from food and drinks consumed during a stop. And again, unlike a car, you do not have the option to turn off the ignition. If you are alive, you burn fuel. So a 5 minute stop at a street light means you have 5 minutes idle life worth less of fuel for the rest of your run. Plus you have to get back into the rhythm, re-warm the muscles, crank up the heart rate, etc.

Sometimes in a tempo run, I do have to do a VPB stop. Even though I do those off the clock, I try to avoid them at all reasonable costs. The first two quarters after are always off pace by about 5-10 seconds a mile.
