My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

I could bore you all with a detailed description of all the strange places I am sore today.  I think I'll skip the anatomy lesson, though, and just say that I was surprisingly not sore in my quads, but every other place never considerred is now complaining.  Are there muscles right below the ankle bone?  I think I am more sore from the downhill (down mountain, really) than the uphill.  Anyway, I ran on the good ol' treadmill at night.  5-5.5 mph most of the time.  I did a couple of fartleks, just because I was bored out of my mind.  1 min. at 7 mph, 30 sec. at 8 mph, and another min. at 7 mph.  Can't believe some of you run that fast for your recovery runs, you PSYCHOS (and I mean than in the kindest possible way).  Happy Friday, everyone.

You should all check out Paul Potts from Britain's You've Got Talent.  He is an extremely funny looking, shy guy with the most amazing voice you've ever heard!  Made me cry.

Make sure you also view his semi-finalist performance of Time to Say Good-Bye!

Inspiring perseverence!

Great artists are often funny looking. Janis Joplin supposedly said to Leonard Cohen in an intimate moment, "We're ugly but we have the music." (Can't think he was too pleased by that at the time, but he did put it in a song.)

Paul was great, Yea, I watch all that singing stuff. Love on stage performances and musicals. I never miss an episode of American Idol. Lybi, it seems you are pledging for the Psycho running club with repeats on hills, running when you are sore, you are on your way to life time addiction to running. Your blog comments always have flare and pazazz. I have a shirt the says fartlek on it, I get some funny comments.

You are probably having soreness in you peroneal tendons. The run the length of your lower leg and then turn under your ankle bone and attach to the foot in a few different places. I've had trouble with that myself. When running steeply uphill these tendons are stretched just at the time you are putting pressure on them. The result can be painful.

The key to avoiding this is to not let the shin and the toe get close to eachother while running. That sounds funny but when your toe is pointing up the peroneal tendons are stretched to their maximum. Long, driving steps do this. Shorten up your stride when going uphill by keeping your stride rate the same as when you are on the flat. Your body will travel slowed than on the flat but your feet will hit just as often, but they will hit closer to eachother. I think that will help.

Lybi, you'd be happy to know that Paul Potts just won the competition and is on his way to sing for the Queen and more importantly, to the recording studio. I just watched the results show live on ITV1, he is amazing. His final performance is on youtube already, look it up (he sang Nessun Dorma again). Isn't it strange how people with such great talents still struggle with self confidence? I hope he starts believing in himself more after this success.
