1 mile:  6:31

5K:  23:37

Half Marathon: 2:04

My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

I started out on the treadmill this morning because James was running outside. The stupid thing is that I can't remember how far I ran! It was either 1.35 or 2.35 miles. I don't know--I was just watching "The Count of Monte Cristo" until James got back. I'll assume the lower number just to make sure I don't short-change my training. Anyway, then I kicked off my shoes and ran 2.6 outside. It is a little bit strange to run on the ground after running on the treadmill. It almost feels like the ground is still moving. It's odd. My pace for the barefoot section was 8:59 on average, which is faster than usual. I think it is just because I was warmed up. It didn't seem like it was faster than I normally go. I hope that means I am getting faster! We'll see.

I still haven't decided which half marathon to try for 1:50 this fall. "When the runner is ready, the half marathon will appear" is kind of what I am thinking. I wish I could stay local, and yet avoid the crushing heat of the valley. Maybe there is some little half in Tuscon or Payson or something.

1.65 miles in the PM barefoot, with my little kids.  James kicked off his shoes for the run, too.  Then, of course, my kids BEGGED us to let them run without shoes, too.  So our whole family went running through the neighborhood barefooted.   We got lots of looks, and even some comments from people in cars.  "Doesn't that hurt?"  and so forth.  It was a fun run.  My kids did really well barefooted.  Zero complaints from my 5 year-old.  And my little squeaky wheel 7 year-old only whimpered twice when he stepped on a rock.

Going from a treadmill to outside or vice a versa is a little weird. It takes a moment for you body to adjust. Good job on getting out this morning.

I love the Count of Monte Cristo - one of my all time favorites. Great pace on your barefoot section.

From Brent on Mon, Jun 09, 2008 at 22:54:34

The "Count" must have thrown off your counting. Great flick, a bit on the dark side.

There may be half in Gunnison, Logon, Hurricon, La Verkon or on the moonacon running with lunicons. Adam Standler, I'm not his papaacon.

Stay Koolacon, B of BS Rools outacon

OK, do you run actually barefoot? Or do you wear socks? Wouldn't it burn your feet to run barefoot, especially with the heat we've been having?

One of my running partners mentioned the Tour de Pee Vee (PV?). It's a half marathon in Prescott that is coming up in the next month or two, I think. Flagstaff also has a half in August: the Big Brothers/Big Sisters. They also have a 5K, which I have run twice. I think the half is super-hilly, so it might just be one to do for the experience, not for time.

Hi Lybi! Thanks for the welcome! I am sure we will see you sometime in the Fall!

Thanks, Linda!

Jody--I agree about the Count. Good flick. It is also a GREAT book.

Brent--You make me laugh. I'll have to look into those cities--they sound kind of like someone made them up!

Shauna--barefoot! I used to wear socks, but I don't anymore. In the morning it is cool on the pavement, in the evening it is nice and warm--but not hot enough to burn. The blacktop can cook a little, though. And Prescott... hmmm, maybe. I saw that race--hope it has a favorable course. It starts at 7,000 ft! Hope it's downhill. That one may be my best option right now.

Bonnie--yea! You are going to raise the average speed of the Arizona chapter of the FRB.

Hey, how serious were you about coming to CS for a half marathon? There's one on Labor Day that I'm secretly hoping to be ready for. shhh. It's one of the few that isn't on a Sunday. It's actually on Monday. It would be so much FUN to have you (and possibly your family) come visit!!!!!

From Lybi on Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:49:04

Laura--OOOOOoooooo. Is it a fast course? I need downhill, and (hehehe) zippo uphill.

From James W on Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 11:25:52

Well, keep in mind it is at abouot 6000 feet - that is going to slow you down. However, maybe I can run that one instead of the Tour de Pee Vee in Prescott or the St. George 1/2 . . . and then we could make a visit out of it. Since I have labor day off, we could head out there on Saturday and maybe drive back here on Tuesday or something, and I would only have to take a day of vacation . . . September 1 is far enough out from St. George that the timing would be fine. Up to you - either way, I think that one of us should run it.

From laura on Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 17:55:18

Swwwweeeeeet!!!! Come! Come! Come! ; ) I'm not sure if it's considered a fast course. It's somewhat downhill and all on a trail (so easier on the knees). Go to www.pprun.org and click on American Discovery Trail Marathon; or go to adtmarathon.com. The full marathon looks like it drops 1300 feet over the full length - that's comparable to St. George, right? The half is an up and back course.

From James W on Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 18:30:25

I checked out the 1/2 marathon course - compared to the Provo River 1/2, I wouldn't consider it fast, but it is also not what I would consider to be extremely difficult either, other than the elevation. Total elevation gain is about 100 feet, net elevation gain is eithe zero or negative number.

Lybi--I am alive. It always seems like I am a week behind on my blogging. I hope you find a half marathon you like. I love the story about you and your family running barefoot. What a good memory!
