My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

So would you like to know what the doctor said about my "exploded" foot?  Ankle sprain.  Nothing exciting, but definitely annoying.  2 weeks at least of NO running.  After that, start with walking and gradually build up to running 2 miles.  "Be super careful--this could drag on for months if you aren't careful.  Your chances of re-injuring this are really high."

I did it on Monday, on my run with my little boy.  It has nothing to do with the wonderful, awesome run last Saturday.  I rolled my ankle, felt nothing unusual, finished the run feeling fine, and then it started to bug...then it started to ache, then it started to hurt, then it started to REALLY hurt.  THEN I had to walk to get my son home from school because they CLOSED my dang road for resurfacing and I COULD NOT use my car.  I thought I was gonna die.  I kept thinking, "The pioneers walked all the way across the country, for goodness sakes, and they didn't die.  I won't die from walking 1.2 miles...." And then I thought, "actually, many of the pioneers DID die.  I am a goner."  And the rest of the walk was just "ow. ow. ow. ow. ow..."

In the spectrum of bad things that can happen in a life (on a scale of 1-10) spraining your ankle has to be about a .35, possibly as high as .5.  Not much.  Nevertheless, I am very much put out.

Aha! I remember asking you last night if you had rolled your ankle, and you told me no! Well, I for one am glad that is nothing worse than an ankle sprain. I think that the doctor is being overly cautious, unless it was a grade 2 or higher sprain (did he/she tell you the grade of the sprain?) Grade 3 is worst, involves torn ligaments in your ankle, Grade 1 is minor. Grade 2 is somewhere in between. Did the doc tell you to keep icing and wrapping it? BTW those were both good things to do yesterday.

I had to think about it for a long time to remember the silly, insignificant roll which now has me sidelined. Jeez! I wish I had been doing something cool, like trying a triple-lux at the ice rink for the first time or something. If I'm gonna get injured, I'd like a cool memory for it...like that huge water slide...ahhh, that one was worth it.

From kungfublonde on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 18:54:26

I'm so sorry to hear about your injury, but I can't stop laughing at this blog! The pioneers dying part- I'm totally cracking up!

Take care of yourself. The Monte's always have to learn the hard way and regret it. Don't be like us!!

From Cheryl on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 21:11:30

If it makes you feel any better, I and some others on the blog can't run either for at least two weeks (probably much longer for me) because of various injuries. From sad experience I've learned that it's always best to let things heal before you try running again. The first injury is bad, the re-injury is always much worse. So take it easy and don't rush back too soon. Cross-training on the elliptical has been a lot of fun for me.

From Scott Zincone on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 23:17:51

At least you did not suffer the same fate as the Donner Party.

Hope you "heel" soon.

From christi on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 23:42:05

I have to say, glad its a sprain and nothing worse. What a bugger though! I think you'll be good as new in a couple weeks. So what is the cross-training plan?

From Lybi on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 00:12:24

Christi--aerobic eating. If you eat fast enough, you can actually break a sweat...

Scott--Hardy har har! You stinker...

From montelepsy on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 02:56:04

You'll have to share your eating regime with me. I'll drop all other forms of exercise if I can just eat all day.

From Kristina on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 13:38:49

poor Lybi! You seem to be having a lot of bad running luck lately. Be sure you do take it easy. Hope it gets better soon, but don't push it or it won't :)

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 09:30:03

Lybi!!! I'm so sad for you! I can't believe your luck. Now tell me, did you have shoes on when you rolled your ankle? If so, you can totally blame them. Speaking of shoes, I saw Jack-O-

Lantern Crocks at Walmart yesterday and thought of you.

I am glad that *I* didn't injure you on Saturday. I would feel really bad.

From Lybi on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:05:51

Camille--YES, I was wearing shoes, which I almost NEVER do during a run with my son. Interestingly, the doctor I saw totally blamed the shoes, too. She said barefoot running is fine, it is great, but you can't expect to change back into shoes all of a sudden and expect no consequences. She railed all over me! Personally, I think I just landed wrong, but I have to admit that I have NEVER rolled my ankle running barefoot. In fact, ankle sprains are one of the injuries that are much much less likely to occur while barefooting, along with plantar fascitis and achilles tendonitis.

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:23:59

Honestly, when you said you rolled your foot, I instantly thought it was your shoes. Last night, after I cut the back of my foot, I wore some clog like shoes to the Fall Festival. I haven't worn this shoes in a long time, and remembered that my husband had banned me from wearing them. I now remember why. I rolled my foot pretty bad walking across the grass. It was all the shoes fault. Okay, maybe 90% there fault, and 10% mine. That's all I'm admitting to though. :o)

Thanks Lybi, it's nice to know that you have faith that I will BE BACK!

From walter on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 10:22:44

Lybi, for goodness sake, put some shoes on already! lol Thats probably what caused the pain huh? You are some kind of freaky! Be careful.

From Kim on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:17:59

Hey Lybster,

I just thought I'd check in and see how all of your fabulous workouts are going and I see you are on the injured reserve too! Dang! Like someone up there said, you are definitely in good company...there are several injured runners out there right now. (check my blog for today 24th to see a warning for all injured runners.)

From Shauna on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 16:02:23

Bummer! I had a bad sprain about 8 years ago (stepped off a curb wrong while running-how glamorous!). I was on crutches for a while, took it easy, and haven't had a problem since. I rolled my ankle in college several times, wouldn't take a break,....and kept rolling it! Soooo, take it easy for sure! Then get better so we can meet for a run somewhere this fall!

From Brent on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 20:33:42

Calamity - sometimes "s....." just happens. I think you may be a day dream believer, with the Monkees. I often fall, trip, run right off the trail, being a day dream believer.
