My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

YIKES! What a run! I ran 2.85 with Christine, which was uneventful, and then headed out for 1.15 more barefoot with Sparky, which was a little TOO eventful. Whenever I run with Sparky I always try to get him to "meet" the other people and dogs that are out on walks so he can learn how to do it without going crazy.

Anyway, there was this little old lady walking a HUGE black chow mix. As I approached her I said "Is it okay if I let him meet your dog?" She was just starting to say that it probably wasn't a good idea, when her dog lunged, broke his leash and came tearing off after us. Let me just let that sink in for a moment... Big dog, frothing at the mouth, tearing after Lybi in her bare feet and her little dog. Thank goodness I watch "The Dog Whisperer" just about every day (he he he). I knew that if we ran he would bite us. So I just stood my ground while the dog chased Sparky around my bare legs while I tried to block him with my stance. I had the wild thought that there was no way I was going to let that dog hurt Sparky--he'd have to go through ME first.

Meanwhile, the other owner appeared too afraid of her dog to do anything! (I can see her point, though, that dog was dang frightening.) He really seemed like he wanted to ELIMINATE Sparky. I kept trying to grab Sparky and, finally succeeding, quickly turned his rear towards the attacker. That's what dogs want--to sniff each other (according to Cesar Millan). And nose to rump is safest because eye contact is what triggers attacks usually. So that humongous dog made a big ol' deal about sniffing Sparky up most abusively, but at least he did not bite. Sparky was so scared he had an accident. I don't blame him a bit--I almost did the same thing, to be honest. After a couple minutes of this, and with both dogs somewhat calmer, I kept waiting for that lady to come get her dog. But I finally had to say "can you come get him, I think it's okay now." I felt quite heroic at the time, but I think I would've rather skipped the whole interlude and left my courage untested.

Interestingly, I got my very first barefoot injury, although it is of little consequence. The other dog stepped on my foot and scratched me with his toenails. A mark of courage!

I almost had an "accident" just reading this.

All of my friends and co-workers know I am the "most scared person" they have ever met when it comes to dogs. I am ok with a dog once we come to know each other, but I am terrified of strangers(dogs).

Probably has something to do with being bit in the face and still having a scar from it when I was 2 yrs. old.

Yikes!!! That sounds pretty scary! Reminds of a few months ago when Kim and I were walking our dog and got attacked by a cat that was a bit crazy after just having kittens!

Hey good luck on the race Saturday. Looking forward to an exciting race report!

From Wildbull on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 09:55:53

Now you have been marked! James better look out! Are you running a 5 k this weekend?

From Mom on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 11:44:08

Did you know that chows consistently come up high on the list of biters?

From Lybi on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 12:08:26

Bull, you won't believe this, but I am actually running the Provo half marathon. My very first race longer than a 5K.

Tom...a cat! That's funny. My sister got dive-bombed by some birds on a run once as a teenager. Pretty crazy!

Scott, I'm so sorry you got attacked as a teeny little guy! That is what I'm trying to prevent when I spend all this time trying to train & socialize my thick-headed pooch.

From Sylvie on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 14:18:26

Ive been attacked quite a few times and bitted maybe 10 times, but thats not bad for grooming dogs for more than 30 years. One time when I was teen My Dad and I went late one night to feed my horse and the rotweiler Riley whose home was in the yard with the horses attacked my Dad and I did the same thing you did. Around and around we went with me fending off Riley, I think he wanted to bite rather than smell.

Bye bye:)

Oh Lybi, that was entirely too eventful. I was scared just reading. You acted so bravely and calmly! I think I would have just panicked, but what do I know about dogs and what they want. I'm pretty uncomfortable around strange dogs. In London, they are all on a leash, but when I went to Moscow and ran there, there were tons of homeless (and hungry!)dogs roaming everywhere and I didn't like that one bit.

From Brent on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 19:15:02

Lybi, good I was not drinking milk. Me and Sylvie's jaws hurt from laughing. I was scared for you to read on, you prevailed with quick and smelly action. The dog whisperer and Paul Newman would be proud. Has Sparky recovered?

Good luck at the 1/2 marathon.

Yikes, Lybi!! Way to keep your cool! (not like the whole tree/sheet incident - hee,hee ... sorry) It's amazing how non-helpful the woman was with her dog. Someone like that shouldn't have a big and scary dog.

From Lybi on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 23:53:49

Wildbull, I can't believe I didn't think to bite that nasty ol' dog. What is wrong with me? I should at least start carrying a tennis racquet when I run. I have never really been good at tennis, but you'd think it would be easier to connect with the humongous head of an attacking dog than a little tiny ball, now wouldn't it?

Brent, thanks for the luck--have a great run yourself at Striders!

From Lybi on Thu, Apr 03, 2008 at 23:55:55

Laura--actually she was just dog sitting it for her son. But I was surprised, too. It's like she was waiting for it to eat me, get full, take a nap, and then she'd come get it while it was unconscious.

From Mik'L on Fri, Apr 04, 2008 at 21:00:40

Lybi- Brent told me I had to read this and I'm dying! That lady should not be taking that dog out! You were so brave! I would have freaked out, especially if it was after my little dogs! Good job on fending it off and more importantly, GOOD LUCK tomorrow at the half. You will do great!

From Lybi on Fri, Apr 04, 2008 at 22:04:14

Thanks Mik'L! I'll run extra hard, just for you. ;) P.S. Your dogs are approximately 1,000 times cuter than this beast was, and definitely worth saving, at the peril of foot scratches.
