My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

Easy 5K  this evening outside.  30:53.  Average pace 9:58.  Felt pretty comfortable--other than that my headphones kept popping out of my ears!  I had to keep wrangling with the wires.  Evidently they were made for more manly ears like my hubby's.  I'll try a different set of ear phones tomorrow.  I am debating whether or not to use music in my race on Sat.   I had been planning on it, but I've been reading a lot of posts about ipods not enhancing races.  I don't know.  Any thoughts?

I say ditch the i-pod. Find your own music on the road. I have on the other hand listened to them before a run to get pumped up. just my two cents.

I like to run 5K's with music. I think it has helped me. But make sure you get your headphones in order because that has distracted me and slowed me down before, which defeats the purpose of bringing music to go faster. I like headphones which have behind the ear hooks.

Hey, NIce to hear from you! I love reading your comments. It's taken me a week or two to get the courage to give this a try. So I've been eavesdropping for a bit. But you've all been pretty motivating so here goes! It's a little cold this A.M so I'm kinda procrastinating but I better get on with it before the day gets to crazy!

Almost cracked Paul's 10 K PR and that was easy! Benjamin did something similar in October of 2004. He ran around 30:30 in training a couple of weeks before the race - I just wanted to see how he would cope with the distance as he had never run that long before. Then on race day he ran 27:25 with the last mile in 8:20, which also gave him his mile PR at the time. He would not have called his training 5 K easy. I think it is realistic for you to expect to beat his time of 27:25.

Regarding the iPod - I second Steve's advice - find the music within yourself. One thing you may want to try - record BINGO played to the beat of 190 then listen to it right before the race enough times to make it stick in your head. The entire race do not talk to anybody, play BINGO in your head, and use your steps as the metronome.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I think I am going to bring my music and not turn it on unless I am really struggling with negative thoughts. Then, of course, I could always visualize Sasha running up to me and shouting Bingo in my ear, and don't I dare say no! That would really get me going.

Wow. I would really feel good about running in the 27 range. I'll do my best to prove you right, Sasha!
